Ingredients
Scale
Vegetables and Fats
- 2 cups chopped onions
- 2 cups chopped celery
- 1/2 cup butter
Bread Base
- 4 cups finely crumbled toasted bread
- 4 cups finely crumbled cornbread
Seasonings
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon dried sage
- 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
Other
- Turkey broth (approximately 2 to 3 cups, enough to moisten)
- 4 large eggs, beaten
Instructions
- Sauté Onions and Celery: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and celery and cook until they are tender and translucent, about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
- Prepare Bread Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the finely crumbled toasted bread and cornbread. Mix them evenly to create the base of the dressing.
- Add Flavor and Eggs: To the bread mixture, add the sautéed onions and celery along with their butter. Then incorporate the salt, freshly ground black pepper, dried sage, and poultry seasoning. Finally, pour in the beaten eggs and gently mix everything together until fully combined.
- Moisten and Bake: Gradually add turkey broth to the bread mixture, stirring as you pour, until the dressing reaches a moist but not soupy consistency. Transfer the mixture into a greased baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 40 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the dressing is heated through.
Notes
- Use day-old or toasted bread and cornbread for best texture.
- Adjust turkey broth quantity based on desired moisture level.
- For extra flavor, add cooked sausage or chopped pecans.
- Let the dressing rest 10 minutes after baking before serving.
- Can be made a day ahead and refrigerated; reheat before serving.
