Description

This Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli is a delicious twist on the classic sandwich, featuring thinly sliced roast beef, sautéed vegetables, and melted provolone cheese rolled in a soft bread dough. It’s perfect for a hearty meal or a fun gathering, offering a flavorful and satisfying experience with a golden, buttery crust.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough & Spread

  • 1 frozen white bread loaf (thawed)
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Vegetables

  • 1 green bell pepper (diced)
  • 1 medium yellow onion (diced)
  • 1 cup mushrooms (thinly sliced)

Filling

  • 8 ounces deli roast beef (thinly sliced)
  • 8 ounces provolone cheese (sliced)

For Cooking & Topping

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (divided)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: Place frozen white bread loaf in a greased bowl covered with plastic wrap. Let rise in a warm area until dough is fully thawed and has doubled in size, approximately 2 to 3 hours.
  2. Sauté the vegetables: Dice bell pepper and onion, and thinly slice mushrooms. Heat 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté vegetables until softened and lightly browned, about 6 minutes. Remove from heat and cool slightly.
  3. Preheat oven: Set oven temperature to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or spray with cooking spray for easy removal.
  4. Roll out dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll the risen dough into a 12 by 18 inch rectangle, maintaining even thickness without tearing.
  5. Make garlic mayo spread: Combine mayonnaise and garlic powder in a small bowl, mixing thoroughly. Spread evenly across the dough surface, leaving a 1/2 inch border around edges.
  6. Layer the fillings: Arrange sliced roast beef evenly over the mayonnaise layer. Distribute sautéed vegetables evenly on top. Finally, layer provolone cheese slices to cover, overlapping if necessary.
  7. Roll and seal: Starting from one long edge, tightly roll the dough like a jelly roll. Tuck fillings in as needed. Pinch seams and ends firmly to seal.
  8. Prepare for baking: Place the roll seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Melt remaining butter and brush generously over the top. Sprinkle with garlic salt, sesame seeds, and dried parsley evenly.
  9. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, until crust is golden brown and internal temperature reaches 165°F.
  10. Rest and serve: Remove from oven and allow the stromboli to rest for 5 minutes to set. Slice with a serrated knife and serve warm.

Notes

  • Letting the dough rise properly is crucial to achieve a light and fluffy crust.
  • You can substitute roast beef with thinly sliced steak or even turkey for a variation.
  • Use a serrated knife for clean slices without squishing the stromboli.
  • Allowing the stromboli to rest before slicing helps prevent the filling from spilling out.
  • For a spicier version, add some sliced jalapeños or red pepper flakes to the sautéed vegetables.
